1987 BMW 325i intermittent no spark

by jbrown38 on Nov 16 2017, 11:55 PM

I am having some issues with an intermittent no spark condition on this car for a couple of days, and I can't figure it out. The ignition coil has battery positive, and a good ground/signal. The issue is that at times, the negative coil terminal doesn't flash during cranking when checked with a test light. The condition doesn't seem to be dependant on wether the engine is warm or cold, it' just random. Here is a list of parts that have been checked and/or replaced.

The ECM was replaced recently, the coil is new, the crank sensor tests good, showing 530 ohms, which is in the range of 500 to 600. All of the engine wiring shows good continuity. The main engine relay tests good, and I'm struggling to determine the issue here. The only thing out of the ordinary is the output of the alternator, which is around 18v while running.

Hey JBrown38 - the 18 volts output from the alternator may or may not be an issue based on the current state of the battery. That shouldn’t keep engine from starting at any time. We would recommend doing a voltage drop testing on power and ground circuits of RPM/CKP sensor during cranking when in the failed state so that you at least have some load on the circuits while testing. A better method to test CKP sensor would be with a scope if you have that capability. Resistance testing won’t usually show a glitch or intermittent failure, but this problem sounds like how a failing CKP sensor acts. Hope this helps!
